Teatro La Fenice & IBM: Innovation to Bring Opera to the World

"La forma d'arte piu' globale e' la musica." – Giampaolo Vianello, Teatro La Fenice

In 2008, Teatro La Fenice and IBM Italy collaborated to digitize, preserve, and share the theater’s artistic assets and made them accessible on the internet through their Digital Sipario solution.

Here to watch is IBM’s official YouTube video of the story.

Also, here you can find IBM’s functional architecture of the solution; from digitalization, data entry, transcoding, and media asset management.

I’ve tried accessing the Digital Sipario website but it seems the website is unavailable. Perhaps, it’s temporarily unavailable or discontinued. If you’re an IBMer or have any advice on the website please comment!

Venice administrations over the last few years, have been very keen on partnering with large brands and corporation to finance much needed art maintenance work as well as revitalization of neglected parts of the city and the "laguna". Though some of the initiatives have been controversial, if anything because there is always a certain disdain for using public treasures as advertising vehicles, I think it could be an effective template for many cities to follow if we want to preserve the cultural assets that are so central to one of Italy's biggest industries: tourism!
