L'Italia del Nuoto Piange Alberto Castagnetti

I believe Alberto Castagnetti deserves to be remembered beyond geographic borders and in a way that his memory may be honored by those who speak Italian or English. Thus my double entry.

Alberto Castagnetti passed away at age 66, leaving an indelible mark in the heart of swimmers and swim fans, but also in those who probably simply admired his rigor and the way he was able to make the Italian colors shine on the world stage. He had swum in the 1972 Summer Olympics and currently he was (is, one is tempted to say, and always will be) the coach of Federica Pellegrini. Their team performance at the 2009 FINA World Championship in Roma – the glorious peak of an already rewarding sequence of wins and world records – speaks highly to the quality of his training and their combined leadership in the world of sports. May he represent a model of inspiration for many young athletes and swimmers. Also, a special thought to Federica: may the water help you heal the deep pain, as it does in life’s most testing times. Swimming takes immense discipline as well as mental and physical endurance, which give us the strength to keep going when we most need it.

Alberto Castagnetti e’ mancato all’eta’ di 66 anni, lasciando un marchio indelebile nel cuore di nuotatori e amanti del nuoto, ma anche in coloro che forse ammiravano semplicemente il suo rigore e il modo in cui era in grado di far splendere i colori dell’Italia sul palcoscenico mondiale. Alberto aveva nuotato alle olimpiadi di Monaco del 1972 ed era attualmente (e’, viene voglia di dire, e rimarra’ sempre) l’allenatore di Federica Pellegrini. La loro performance di squadra ai campionati FINA 2009 di Roma – glorioso apice in una sequenza gia’ gratificante di vittorie e record del mondo – dicono molto circa le qualita’ di allenatore di Alberto e il ruolo leader che allenatore e nuotatrice hanno svolto nel mondo dello sport. Possa Alberto rappresentare un modello di ispirazione per tanti giovani atleti e nuotatori. Rivolgo anche un pensiero speciale a Federica: possa l’acqua aiutarti a colmare questo profondo dolore, come fa nei momenti di prova piu’ duri. Il nuoto richiede immensa disciplina e resistenza sia mentale sia fisica, le stesse che ci danno la forza di andare avanti quando piu’ ne abbiamo bisogno.
