Today, I am here chatting with Brandon Peters, a Southern California-based renowned personal trainer, fitness expert, and celebrity coach.
Brandon, why did you decide to become a Personal Trainer?
Shortly after I graduated college, I jumped into a cushy nine to five office job. Though it paid well, came with great benefits, and looked great on paper, I was bored to death with it! I soon realized that I was in the wrong field. The moment I came to this realization was truly a light bulb moment. I had always been an extremely active kid, involved with various organized sports, loved working out, and helping people. So, personal training just made sense to me. Afterwards, I quit my office job and started studying for my personal training certification. I fell in love with the material and ultimately the career. I've been a trainer for over a decade now and I still love every moment of it.
How would you describe your philosophy about being fit and healthy?
Slow and steady wins the race. I see too many people rush into workout programs and diets only to fail. Why? Because it wasn't realistic or sustainable to begin with. If you are looking to improve your health and become fit for life, start slowly and progress gradually in the direction you want to go. Set short-term and long-term goals and ask yourself, is this realistic and sustainable?

My family and God
You worked as a fitness director at banshee (cinemax tv series) and have trained the tv show actors. what were your top exercise routines and suggestions to keep the celebrities in tip top condition and looking lean year round?
Each actor had different needs, so every exercise routine was different. I would say I always like to maximize my time with my clients. Therefore, circuit training, supersets, and tri-sets were common practices with the actors. Because they were often strength training for consecutive days, I would break up their work (e.g. upper body one day, lower body the next) to ensure they weren't working the same muscle groups two days in a row. This strategy ensured that they were getting the proper recovery time. Naturally, this prepared them for their 15-16 hour days on set.
For nutrition, I had each of them log their food to make sure their macros (proteins, carbs, and fats) were on point. There are a ton of great apps out there, but I used MyFitnessPal. This helped hold them accountable when I wasn't working with them and enabled me to easily review their work.

How does your technique and workouts differ from others out there? what makes it so effective?
I always assess my client's level of fitness thoroughly (prior to their first session). This technique allows me to immediately address limitations in posture and movement patterns that might otherwise cause injury down the road. With this information, I am able to design a totally customized fitness routine and nutrition plan for each client. I am also a firm believer in educating a client through their journey (not just telling them what to do), so they can sustain their new level of fitness. Finally, I closely monitor my client's progress with monthly measurement check-ins. I also conduct detailed note-taking for each workout. With this calculated approach, I am able to train each client as safely and effectively as possible to ensure they reach their goal(s).
How do you keep your fitness knowledge up to date?
In order to keep my certifications current and to stay on top of all the newest information, I earn 20 hours of approved continuing education every two years. In addition, I am constantly inundating myself with up-to-date health and fitness literature, videos, etc.
In addition to personal training, do your clients ask you for nutrition plans?
Yes. I'm a Certified Fitness Nutrition Specialist. For those who want a detailed nutrition plan, I offer a program specific to the individual's needs and goals. This is a separate service. For those who want to simply tweak or adjust their eating habits, basic guidance and advice is complimentary. Nutrition plans are also popular with my remote clients (those I work with online).
