I recently started to look into why fake news tv seems to be healthy in the US, the English speaking world and in much of Western Europe, but is not easy to find on Italian TV. Italian TV does have a lot of comedians who imitate politicians and other public figures, and space for them on programs, but no Saturday Night Live Weekend Update or The Daily Show.

...actually Striscia la Notizia is a classic. (Article in Italian here: http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Striscia_la_notizia)

The problem with Italian news (and media) and their televised satire (or journalistic, i.e. Il Vernacoliere) is that the border between fake and real, parody or factual reporting is blurred, ultimately as credible as it is entertaining.

Personally I found this to be an all-round, Western Cultures problem, but Italians who -in my experience- tend to be less hypocritical about "official" news (coming from the government, Media or opinion makers) have a unique verve for basically not believing anything, besides what they like to believe.

To this matter, a journalistic joke from the late 80's is stuck in my mind, and thinking back it uniquely blended news and parody:

"Ultima Notiza: Scatta l'ora legale. Panico nel PSI."

:) [I don't expect everybody to get it...]
