Can anybody help me with expressing the concept of "Essere in Cassa Integrazione" in English?
As I found "redundancy benefit / wage fund guarantee" but they seem to relate to the money you get, rather than "status".
I know that there is no correspondent in the US or UK, but how would you call it in English?
Thanks a lot to everyone.

IMHO it could be translated in furlough mandated by employers. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furlough for the complete definition. Still probably is not the best translation... .

Thanks a lot Domenico.
In the meantime I also got "short time work". What do you think of this one???? As I am quite confused.

sorry to answer so late but i did not get the notification of your reply.

To me short time work would mean that you work less hours then usual but actually when you are in "cassa integrazione" you don't work at all... . On the other hand the "furlough mandated by employers" does not involve any kind of partial salary that in italy employees in "cassa integrazione" have, so maybe we could translate it with: furlough mandated by employers with a minimum salary paid ?

Ciao,
dom
Thank you for your further reply and sorry for being back to you so late.
I presume you are right with your explanations.
Nonetheless, in some cases (such as my company's) you work less and are kind of paid 80% your salary. The concept I would like to express is that our employees cannot be contacted during some time of the day as we are currently not working 8 hours, mon-fri. The salary question is not the point, in this specific context. Therefore, would you still use furlough to express that our offices are closed in the afternoon or in certain days of the week?
Thanks a stack.

I think Domenico's definition is the most accurate. Another one could be...
Cassa Integrazione ~= Unemployment Insurance
Cassintegrato ~= Unemployment Insurance Beneficiary

In the US at least...
Ok thank you very much,
Cristina
