Fresh feedback on the BAIA event about data portability held tonight in Palo Alto: a very lively, spontaneous discussion. Three bright panelists, Daniela Barbosa, of DataPortability, Steve Greenberg, founder of Ciabe, and Lorenzo Thione, founder of Powerset, brought to life their business experiences and tech savvy, openly defending their opinions while moderator Mary Trigiani made good use of her wit and diplomacy. The audience participated adding a healthy level of interactivity. A valuable point made by Steve is that social networks are only a niche example for potential applications of data portability. Daniela stressed the issues of usability and policy challenges yet to be solved, and Lorenzo highlighted how crucial it is to focus on user needs (a concept which should never escape the sight of any entrepreneur), resuscitated the concept of data mining (lately a bit neglected, or is it just my impression?), all while reminding us that if a system does not meet user requirements, someone will eventually disrupt the whole business model and find an innovative way to address those needs.
Another opportunity offered by BAIA to think of how we can be creative in our professions and be open to new and evolving ideas.
Yes, great event! Many thanks to our sponsors Caffe' Del Doge, No Hold and DLA Piper.

The slideshow is now available on Slideshare.
Enjoy!
From the slideshow is clear we are in the age of collaboration: years ago big players in the IT world tried to create their own standard and force everybody else to follow... .
Now, and i would say thanks to the internet, there is a global effort to make different platforms talking to each other because it is profitable to do so... .
From there the next step is to make the data "easily" portable and accessible across multiple different platforms: this is one of the most exciting project i have ever heard about, and don't take it wrong... it is profitable too.

Unfortunately i was stuck in the office and i could not make it to the seminar, so thanks everybody for publishing the event presentation and related articles.
