Aurora Meneghello's "Default: the Student Loan Documentary" is showing at the Roxie on Feb. 12th, followed by a panel on student loans. Thanks to this film and the work of the activists portrayed in the movie, student loans are now one of the hot topics of this election year. Outstanding student debt in the United States has already surpassed credit card debt, but it has none of the protections: for those graduates who cannot make payments, there's no bankruptcy protection and interest fees on private loans can reach an astounding 28%! This is a crucial issue for our generation and for the future of higher education. If you have young children, get involved with the movement to change the way banks and universities are setting up students for a lifetime of debt.
